Shakespeares Historic Plays
The role of women has changed since the time in which Shakespeares historic plays were written. Regardless of the change in roles, looking at the role of women in these history plays can learn lessons. There are values hidden beneath each role that can be applied in todays society toward the social roles of women. For example, starting a family within the boundaries of marriage can help diminish disease. Shakespeare played on the ideals and fears of men in his time when he characterized the role of women in society. The ideal was an obedient, subservient, and soft-spoken woman who lived for her husband and wanted to bear and care for the children and the family like Queen Isabel in Richard II or Lady Percy in Henry IV. A harsh, ill-mannered, and controlling woman seeking her own needs and desires was not desirable of that time. A woman was not to be independent and unruly. Such a women was not fit to be a wife or mother like Queen Margaret in Henry VI. Not only are the plays of Shakespeare well written literary works, nut they mirror the social roles of society at that time in history. View details

While the artistic creations were obstructed by the mainly conservative taste of the aristocracy, the committee dedicated to the creation of propaganda had no influence. However, with the revolt came change, and the eventual rise of the Soviet Cinema of the silent film era. Representation of the City and the Suburbs
On the surface, Desperately Seeking Susan appears to be a light romantic comedy. Desperately Seeking Susan has a distinctly feminist flavour. In its contrast of marriage and suburbia versus the single city life, it uses characterization, spaces, dress and music to highlight the transformation of Roberta from suburban housewife to real city woman. The film portrays marriage as a trap and the bohemian lifestyle devoid of responsibility as a desirable, fulfilling alternative. In contrasting the suburbs and city in this way, the film emphasizes a portrayal of suburbia as an emotional, spiritual and cultural wasteland, while it is the city and its inhabitants that capture the imagination, heart and mind of Roberta. Her transformation from suburban housewife to city-dwelling independent woman, who chooses to have a relationship with Dez rather than being trapped in marriage with Gary, is underscored by changes in dress, by the acquisition of new friends, a job, and a new urban environment. Structuralism in Marxist theories
Structuralism has provided a framework through which Marxist ideas can be made to act upon the works of literature to which it is applied. The idea that the parts and characters of literature can be reduced to a function and these functions to a framework leaves the door open for Marxism to enter and declare itself and its ideology the structure of literature. Such critics and theorists as Althusser and Eagleton have demonstrated the extent to which this is possible. Althusser has shown that the socio-economic base of a given artist provides an independent variable through which the superstructure of his socially influenced ideology shines through. Eagletons ideas reflect something similar, but he argues more strongly that literature is itself an ideology, and all are illusory yet still beneficial to the one who seeks to find something of worth and an agent of change in literature. Representation of Women in Plays
Both the play Les Femmes Savantes by Moliére and Mme. de Sevignés letters demonstrate women acting in roles that have been accorded them by both nature and society. While the letters by Mme. Sevigne display acceptance of this role, the women of Les Femmes Savantes show more discomfort with remaining solely within the home, rather seeking intellectual stimulation and academic elevation. The sentiments of both authors betray support of the domesticated nature of women through the representations of them in those situations. Moliére even represents them as unable to function when their pursuits go beyond the domestic. However, the fact that Mme Sevignes expressions have gained her literary recognition adds a dimension of scholarliness to the domesticated nature of her treatment of women and demonstrates that women are indeed able to balance intellectual and domestic pursuits.
